Knock

Knock Lake Nest Box Project

Knock Lake  is the largest fresh water lake in Fingal. The Project aims to diversify range of breeding bird species. It is a great habitat but in need of management and help.

The Lake is located at Balrothery, about 3 km south of Balbriggan. It is a shallow artificial lake set in sloping farmland and has been used as a reservoir.

The lake was acquired by Gormanston Angling Club and a restocked with Brown and Rainbow Trout. The club kindly allowed BWI to erect a hide on the site and steps are being taking to enhance the bird life in the area. Records for the site are being compiled and stored in a database.

The children of Jim Boylan's class in Balbriggan Community College have built over 30 nest boxes, which were erected around the lake. Derek Mooney and Richard Collins from Mooney goes wild visited the school for the handover of the boxes to committee members Frank Prendergast, Cormac Crowley and Sean Pierce.

Derek Mooney admires the craftwork of the nest boxes made by Jim Boylan’s class.              Some of the class displays their finished nest boxes.
